AI SEO for small business: a simple plan that works
· 6 min read
AI can write a thousand blog posts in a day. That is exactly the wrong way to use it for SEO. Search engines reward pages that answer a real question better than anyone else, and a thousand generic posts do the opposite.
Here is a plan that uses AI for what it is good at: analysis, structure and first drafts, with you adding what only you know.
1. Start with the data you already have
Connect Google Search Console. It shows the searches where your site already appears, how often, and at what position. This is the most valuable SEO data you own, and most small businesses never open it.
Look for pages in positions 5 to 20. Google already thinks they are relevant. Small improvements move them onto page one, which is where almost all the clicks are.
Sage, our AI SEO specialist, reads Search Console directly and lists these pages with what to change.
2. Fix the basics on pages that matter
Before writing anything new, check your most important pages:
- Title tag: the main search phrase, near the start, under about 60 characters
- Meta description: a reason to click, under about 160 characters
- One clear H1 that matches what the page is about
- Internal links from your other pages, with descriptive link text
- Speed and mobile layout
AI is excellent at auditing this across many pages at once.
3. Find the questions your customers ask
Good keywords are the questions your customers type before they buy. Get them from:
- Search Console queries you already show up for
- The questions customers ask you on calls and by email
- "People also ask" boxes in Google results
- Competitor pages that rank
Group them by intent. One page should answer one intent well. Ten pages answering the same thing compete with each other.
4. Write with your experience in it
This is where you matter most. AI can draft the structure and the general explanation. You add:
- Real examples from your work
- Your prices, process and opinions
- Photos of your actual product or team
- Numbers you can stand behind
Search engines look for signs of real experience. So do readers.
5. Measure, then repeat
Check Search Console monthly. Pages that move up get more internal links and updates. Pages that do nothing after three months get rewritten or merged.
What to expect
New pages often take weeks to a few months to rank. Improving pages that already get impressions is the fastest win, which is why the plan starts there.
