How to cut wasted Google Ads spend with AI
· 5 min read
Most small Google Ads accounts waste a meaningful share of their budget. It is rarely one big mistake. It is a handful of small leaks that nobody has time to check every week.
AI is well suited to this job: it can read every search term and every campaign, every week, without getting bored. Here is where to look.
1. Search terms that will never buy
Your keywords are not what people searched. The search terms report is. Look for:
- Job seekers ("jobs", "salary", "careers")
- People wanting free or DIY versions
- Locations you do not serve
- Competitor names you did not mean to target
Each one becomes a negative keyword.
2. Broad match without enough data
Broad match can work well with strong conversion data. Without it, it spends on loosely related searches. If an ad group has had no conversions for weeks, tighten the match types or the keywords.
3. Conversion tracking that is wrong
If tracking counts page views or duplicate events as conversions, automated bidding optimises for the wrong thing. Check that each conversion is a real lead or sale, counted once.
4. Ads running when nobody buys
Look at results by hour, day and device. If calls only come in during office hours, there is little point in paying for clicks at 3am.
5. Landing pages that leak
A good ad sending people to a slow or vague page wastes the click. The page should repeat the promise in the ad and make the next step obvious.
How to use AI for this safely
Connect your ad account and ask for a weekly review of the last 7 days: wasted spend, search terms to exclude, and what to pause. Then approve each change before it is applied. You keep control; the AI does the reading.
That is exactly how Max, our AI ads manager, works: every change waits in your Inbox until you approve it.
A simple weekly routine
- Monday: AI review of last week's search terms and spend
